This gallery contains assorted pictures of forest and plantation fires in Northern Riau, Sumatra, Indonesia, taken in 2004. Note the typical fire spread pattern in the plantation area. Forest residuals have been stacked or "wind rowed". These wind rows contain a lot of dry fuel. The fire spreads along the rows up to 45 degrees from the main wind direction. Picture 2497-2499 shows a successful protection of the log stock. The fire was stopped less then 100 meters from the stacks. Not the enormous amount of residuals in picture 2973-2977. Some appears to be production timber left in the field to rot. This is not uncommon and it creates a fire hazard in the plantation forest. |
